Deforestation
THE ISSUE:
Deforestation happens when large areas of land are cleared of trees. The trees and land are converted for other purposes, such as timber, agriculture, and urban use. Deforestation is happening all over the world at an alarming rate. Every second, a chunk of forest equal to the size of a soccer field is lost. (Source: The Guardian)
When forests are destroyed, massive amounts of carbon are released into the atmosphere, accelerating global warming. Beef, soy, palm oil, and wood products are some of the biggest contributors to global deforestation. (Source: Union of Concerned Scientists)
THE FACTS:
Forests cover more than 30% of earth’s land area. They are critical to the health of our planet. They provide homes for about 80% of terrestrial biodiversity (Source: The World Bank). Forests also produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In one year, a mature tree can absorb 22 kilograms (48 pounds) of carbon dioxide. (Source: European Environment Agency)
THE SOLUTIONS:
To stop deforestation, governments around the world need to crack down on illegal clearing. Sustainable forest management and forest restoration are also needed. We can all do our part by planting trees whenever possible. Look for the Forest Stewardship Council logo when purchasing paper and wood products, and avoid products that contain palm oil.
