Carbon Footprint

THE ISSUE:

Carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by an individual, product, service, or organization. As the concentration of greenhouse gases increases, more heat is trapped in our atmosphere, causing the average global temperature to rise. Carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas most commonly emitted by human activities.

THE FACTS:

Fossil fuel use is the primary source of global greenhouse gas emissions. In 2017, emissions of energy-related carbon dioxide totaled 32.5 billion metric tons. (Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration) Between 1990 and 2019, warming caused by human-produced greenhouse gases increased by 45%. (Source: NOAA) 19 of the 20 hottest years ever recorded have been since 2001, with the 5 hottest being the last 5 years. (Source: NASA)

THE SOLUTIONS:

We can reduce our carbon footprint through our transportation, housing, and food choices. Drive less, carpool, and ride a bike whenever possible. Turn off lights and appliances, and choose energy-efficient lighting. Eat less meat, especially beef, which produces over 6 pounds of carbon dioxide per 4 oz. serving. (Source: Journal of Industrial Ecology). Minimize waste and shop sustainably. Buy carbon offsets to balance out greenhouse gas emissions. These simple actions can reduce your carbon footprint and help fight climate change.
